Matthew 14:22-33

“Live the Convinced Life”

By Seth Plummer

The reality: We must all belay ourselves to something/someone during our climb.

The problem: Because of our sinful nature, we all try to belay ourselves to created things and to lies.

The truth: Just like you can only trust one belayer with your life on the wall, you can only trust one true Savior with your soul.

The reason: Jesus alone has the authority to belay us because He alone conquered both the climb and the fall.

How should you climb? As one convinced.

What we must accept: God designed us to be supported by Him

What does it mean to live the convinced life?

  1. Continually secure yourself to Christ.

Q: Who or what do I belay myself to?

2. Have courage to walk out on the waters.

Q: Where in my life am I allowing doubts or uncertainty to dictate my climb?

3. Follow Jesus’ lead.

4. Call out to Jesus in faith.

5. Find rest and peace in Jesus, no matter your progress.

How should we climb? As a Church convinced.

How? God designed us to rely on the good things in life, as long as they do not become our belayer.

Q: How can our church continue to live the convinced life? What is my part to play in helping convince others of Christ’s sovereignty?

Gospel Connection: Jesus came and conquered both the climb and the fall so that we too can conquer the same through His power and the security He provides.

Questions to consider:

  1. Who or what am I belaying myself to at the moment? Is it Jesus and Jesus only, or a Jesus+ type of thing? Is there a false support that you just can’t seem to give up? Jesus is here to take the full weight of your soul.

  1. In what ways could I be more empowered in my life if I were to be convinced of Jesus’s sovereignty to the point where I give Him my full weight? Where in my life have I let doubts or uncertainty reign? How much better could I climb if I was more trusting of my security in Christ? How can I live the convinced life?

  1. How can I support my fellow believers and church as God wants me to without becoming their crutch or their belayer? How can I best lead them to be convinced of Christ’s sovereignty and to place their complete trust in Him alone?

  1. How can our church as HFMC live the convinced life? How can we be more trusting of God’s control over us in the midst of great change? Are there things or people that our church is tempted to give some of our weight to, instead of fully to Jesus? How can we use and appreciate the things God gifts us without allowing them to become crutches or false belayers?

  1. As the body of Christ as a whole, outside our denomination, can we convince the world to abandon their false belayers by showing them the extent to which we trust our one true Belayer, Jesus Christ? What would it look like for you and your church to help this happen?
