“A History of Rejection” – 1 Samuel 8

A History of Rejection

1 Samuel 8

Sermon Notes

Guest Speaker: Ethan Tong

What does this passage teach us?

(1) Israel wanted a tangible leader rather than an intangible God

(2) When Israel rejected God’s authority, they rejected God

(3) Israel knew the consequences, and they ignored them

What does this passage want us to remember?

(1) Wrestle with a dynamic God

(2) Obey, even when you don’t feel like it

(3) Consider the consequences of rejecting God as King

Questions to consider:

What tangible, safe things—or people—are you turning to as a stand-in for God?

What instances can you think of where you chose to disobey some sort of authority (a person or even just God’s law) because you thought you knew better?

What things are on your throne right now that will take things from you?
